Vieux Farka Toure, Grouper, Zelienople

When: Sat., June 6, 9 p.m. 2009
Price: $15
The debut from one-woman band GROUPER, 2005’s Way Their Crept, gave you very little to hum along with but plenty to make your mind reel. Back then Liz Harris’s main instrument was her voice, which she ran through reverb and delay pedals to whip up a swirling pea-soup fog of sound. Her fourth and latest full-length, last year’s Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill (Type), is a much less disorienting affair. She’s dialed back the effects, making it possible to follow her fragile sung melodies, and her voice now threads its way through sparse piano and guitar figures. I still can’t understand the words, but even without them the music’s wistful vibe comes across clearly. VIEUX FARKA TOURE (see Thursday) headlines; Grouper plays second and Zelienople opens. —Bill Meyer
