Vienna Saxophone Quartet

One highlight of DePaul University's new-music sampler featuring the talented Vienna Saxophone Quartet is Steve Reich's 1985 New York Counterpoint, one in a series of intriguing works that have a soloist playing live with and against himself on prerecorded tape. In this rearrangement by VSQ's Susan Fancher, a sax quartet (subbing for the clarinets originally intended) follows the minimalist strategy of segueing from opening pulses into sequences of rippling melodic patterns. The changes in rhythm and accent are subtle, creating Reich's trademark of lulling perpetual motion. Also to be performed by the VSQ--whose well-schooled members are Austrian (Sabine Zwick, alto; Thomas Schon, tenor) and American (Northwestern doctoral students Mark Engebretson, baritone, and Fancher, soprano)--are XAS by Iannis Xenakis and Night Light by Northwestern professor M. William Karlins. While XAS builds on abstract sound masses, Night Light is more accessible, with a toe-tapping tribute to New York nightclubs, where Karlins once played tenor sax in big bands. The only vocal work on the program is Janice Misurell-Mitchell's Are You Ready?, a deliberately goofy, largely improvised sound poem. Friday, 8 PM, concert hall, DePaul University, 800 W. Belden; 325-7260 or 847-866-8936. TED SHEN
