Van Halen, Kool & the Gang | United Center | Rock, Pop, Etc | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Fri., Feb. 24, 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $49.50-$149.50
The bizarro world, so close to our own, that Van Halen occupied for the 40 years (!) of its existence has never had an atmosphere that could support subtlety or dignity—or anything else that couldn't withstand being smothered under a pile of sweaty spandex and finger-tapped guitar solos, or that might get in the way of the band's mission to provide hella good times. But Van Halen's recent history of shameful lineup swaps and unthrilling music has been undignified, even for them, so it's lucky that David Lee Roth has returned to the fold once again. Even if their new A Different Kind of Truth (Interscope) doesn't quite reach the ridiculous heights of 1984, at least it's got Roth squealing about "sexy dragon magic" and other unbelievable nonsense—just the way we like him. —Miles Raymer Kool & the Gang open.
