Valois Cafeteria | Hyde Park | American, Southern/Soul Food | Restaurant
Long-standing cash-only cafeteria serving homestyle food at cheap prices. Breakfast served daily till 4 PM.

Our Review

The lines are out the door at breakfast at the Valois--that's "vuh-loyz"--which despite its cheerful murals of sailboats on Lake Michigan and scenes from a south-side park still feels institutional. And that's part of its appeal: for $12.95 and the willingness to eat your dinner at a gray Formica table to a sound track of dishes being stacked, you can get a prime rib dinner with a potato and a vegetable. Trays of fried catfish, hamburger steak, baked chicken, T-bones, mac 'n' cheese, and chef's salads wait to be plated by friendly servers; you can also order a grilled cheese or a patty melt from the kitchen. Breakfast (everything from steak and eggs to cold cereal) is served until 4 PM, and desserts include various cream pies, cheesecake, and -- on one visit -- fresh watermelon.
