Any show that goes out of its way to parody Les Misérables is okay in my book, and Urinetown, Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann’s 2001 musical in which peeing is a privilege, does that with aplomb. Unfortunately, in Awkward Pause Theatre's production much of that humor is lost due to bad acoustics and worse staging. Awkward Pause has delivered on scaled back shows in the past (its 2012 Rocky Horror was dripping with great production values). Here, though, the lighting is flat and the black box space doesn’t suit the show. Like a flock of awkward geese, actors get stranded in a perpetual upstage "V." Which is too bad, because when they aren’t being tripped up by the problematic set, the cast is solid. —Chloe Riley
