The plot of John Godber's 1984 play is iconic: a once great, now fallen leader shows a gang of losers how to win, thereby redeeming himself and them. Godber writes about rugby, but it could as easily have been boxing or Little League or a factory crew. Still, his oddball wit--part of the play is performed in mock-heroic couplets--and gift for creating odd but believable characters make the story seem fresh. Director Rob Chambers has created a tight ensemble piece, packing the play with actors capable of bringing eccentrics to life without mocking them or falling into easy stock characters. Mira Vasiljevic is especially strong as a tough-minded former rugby player. --Jack Helbig a Through 10/21: Fri-Sat 8 PM, Sun 3 PM, Circle Theatre, 7300 W.
