Theatre Seven of Chicago's tribute comprises short plays written by nine local playwrights on icons including Jane Addams, Mavis Staples, and Ida B. Wells. (The title comes from a 1913 imprecation by an opponent of women's suffrage.) The stories are illuminating, but the in-between moments, when cast members discuss each piece—this is staged as if it were all one big rehearsal—slow things down with too much exposition. Some context is necessary, but the audience should be given the opportunity to draw its own conclusions. Lauren Yee's piece on Ann Landers, starring a fierce Jaclyn Hennell, is a stark and artful depiction of the eternal work/life balancing act. —Marissa Oberlander
