A farce is a complicated contraption—half windup toy, half character-based comedy. If it's too mechanical, it feels soulless, but if it gets bogged down in individuals the cool gadgetry suffers. Playwright Paul Slade Smith deftly balances the two elements in this inventive, intelligent, fast-paced piece. His plot is a wonderfully unpredictable apparatus involving seven fools entangled in a hilarious web of sex, lies, and political corruption. Yet his characters are real people with real needs and fascinating foibles. At least that's how they come across in this flawless production, directed by Alison Vesely and packed with a cast of inspired comic actors led by likable Kevin McKillip and goofy Erin Noel Grennan. —Jack Helbig
