Recently in one of our English Language Development (ELD) classes, the group was reading the newspaper as they always do and noticed in your article of June 9th "Whatever Happened to Irene Siegel?" misinformation about Centro Latino/Universidad Popular. I was dismayed to see the Reader refer to this agency as "defunct"; this is far from the truth. Universidad Popular is a thriving community organization located in the heart of Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Since the 1970s Universidad Popular (UP), or the People's University, has serviced the city's most disadvantaged adults. Universidad Popular provides classes such as English Language Development, Spanish and English literacy, and life skills seminars consisting of learner-centered open discussions with topics including immigration and citizenship, women's empowerment, and health issues. A multitude of adults have benefited from these services resulting in personal growth and community empowerment. We also offer Spanish as a second language classes as mentioned in the article. This particular program is designed to provide instruction in Spanish language and Latin American culture and history to those who are interested in learning more about the Latino community. It is a place where people come together to share experiences, views, hopes, frustrations, dreams, skills, knowledge, information, and whatever else they deem relevant. The focus at UP is learning with and from one another.

We wish to extend an invitation to you and any of your readers to come and visit our facility so that we can share with you more information about our center and the services that we offer. We are located at 1510 N. Rockwell, and we are open 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. I hope that this helps to clarify any misunderstanding that you may have had about Universidad Popular.
