In this age-inappropriate musical parody of Aladdin, lewd banter isn't the main perversion foisted on the Disney original. Far from it. Taking a cue from Wicked, the leading men have been flipped, so that Aladdin's a pickup artist, and Jafar's a sourpuss moralist with a heart of gold and a tragic backstory. After a political blitz, Jafar is unable to stall an economic downturn, control a citizenry that reviles him for both legitimate and delusional grievances, or even outfox the craven sultan—until he remembers the magic lamp. Even if Jafar's romantic entanglements err on the side of self-indulgence, and a Pixar side plot tends toward the heavy-handed, the show more than recoups its losses with a dozen nice touches, like when the doe-eyed princess nonetheless recognizes Aladdin, fresh from his royal makeover, as the same guy in different clothes. The very competently sung book cleverly samples the wider Disney musical canon. —Jena Cutie
