Twelves, Yello Fever, Derek Specs

When: Mon., Dec. 8, 9 p.m. 2008
Price: $10
The Twelves don’t share the wild abandon that characterizes many of their peers in the Brazilian dance scene—they don’t sweat neon like CSS and their music has zero in common with the ADHD booty beats of baile funk. But the Twelves’ low-key constructions have won over even DJs who generally prefer noisy bloghouse bangers. The duo’s MO is to take polite disco-house beats, layer them with clipped, filtered guitars and burbling electro synths, and, in the event that they’re doing an indie-rock remix (which is often), top it all off with the dude from the Virgins or the Black Kids singing about a girl. Daft Punk seems to be a guiding influence, but the Twelves don’t have that group’s aggressive edge and euphoric highs—they’re more like daft pop, a la Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better With You,” which is not a bad thing at all. Curtified and Derek Specs open. —Miles Raymer
