The melancholy strain in William Shakespeare's best comedies is nowhere as affecting as in this lovesick tale of sexual confusion and unrequited affection. Duke Orsino loves Olivia, who loves the duke's page, who's actually a disguised Viola, who loves Orsino. In the Arc Theatre's outdoor staging, director Mark Boergers capitalizes on the script's latent queer vibe—he has all of the principals at least flirt with the idea of a same-sex dalliance, and a couple go whole hog. Though faithful to the Bard, the abrupt return to hetero norms at the end feels like a loss of directorial nerve after the display of fluid sexuality that precedes it. Tyler Meredith charms throughout as a Viola filled to bursting with a kind of ebullient longing.—Zac Thompson
