There’s no missing the warm intimacy on last year’s Sukierae (dBpm), the double album Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy made with his 19-year-old son Spencer, a nimble drummer. A few outside musicians (including multi-instrumentalist Scott McCaughey of the Minus 5 and singers Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius) make spare contributions, but otherwise it’s just father and son navigating the 20 songs. As the leader of Wilco, Tweedy pere surrounds himself with a stellar cast of musicians who perpetually craft exquisite, shifting arrangements. The vibe of Sukierae is so stripped-down that its 72 minutes seem a bit excessive—the album often feels more like a demo than a finished product—but it’s that lean form, not the hooky, elegant writing, that distinguishes this project from Wilco. Since taking their act on the road, however, the Tweedys have put together a strong live band that includes bassist Darin Gray, guitarist Jim Elkington, and keyboardist Liam Cunningham. And while a concert video of a New York performance from last fall suggests the group hasn’t made the songs any more elaborate or splashy, there’s definitely more spark and interplay. —Peter Margasak Tweedy also plays on Fri 3/6.
