TV on the Radio

When: Mon., March 23, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: sold out
Though they’ve reached festival-headliner status, TV on the Radio are far from being a band of quintessential rock stars. Never bothering with bombast or fireworks, they simply make otherworldly rock songs that real rock stars wish they could touch. TV on the Radio set such a high bar for themselves that I was initially a tad disappointed by their fifth album, November’s Seeds (Harvest), because it doesn’t reach the cosmic thrill of their previous efforts. But after giving it time, I realize that Seeds is a thing of beauty in its own right, and some of its tracks deserve positions in the TVOTR canon—in particular the romantic dubstep thumper “Careful You” and the swoon-to-the-heavens opener “Quartz.” The blissful album is TVOTR’s most pop-centric, actually, and perhaps its most life-affirming. It’s hard to separate these tracks of uplifting love from what the band went through behind the scenes when bassist Gerard Smith succumbed to lung cancer in 2011, a little more than a week after the group released Nine Types of Light. Intentional or not Seeds, the first album since Smith’s death, offers a lovely tribute and shows how a group that made a career out of producing unrivaled songs can retain a mystical edge. Prior to tonight’s show, the band will play an in-store at Reckless Records on Broadway (3126 N. Broadway) at 6 PM. A wristband is required for entry and can only be obtained by purchasing Seeds from the store the day of the show. Limit one wristband per customer. —Leor Galil
