Re: “Columbia College president to student: 'Shut up'

Carter was unqualified to lead the college from day one. He's far from a leader and does not possess the intellect one would hope for in a college president. While Columbia has tried to turn itself into a "world class institution" by calling itself such, it is hugely dependant on that student unprepared for college, who can't get in anywhere else. This is its achilles heel and changing the game will take longer than the school's cash reserves can allow. Narrowing acceptance rates will do nothing in the short run, as the school needs the cash to support its operations. It's an Enron-type scenario and a catch 22, because as better prepared students are attracted to the myth of the school's heavily financed marketing campaign, many of them find themselves in classes with peers who can neither read nor write nor compete, so the entire first and second year experience for a "better prepared" student often leads to extreme disappointment and a high transfer rate. Would you pay over $30K a year to live on campus and attend classes that are a repeat of your freshman year in high school? Add to this a perfect storm of pissed-off and exploited adjuncts, a board that raises little money, a horribly disorganized and often stumbling bureacracy, and a vision of itself so disconnected from reality, and well, the future is not so bright, I'm afraid. Columbia was a much better school in the '80s, when it knew what it was and played to its strengths. Now, it wants to be everything to everyone and it just can't and won't succeed.
