True Twilight: A Glee Club Musical

When: Wed., Sept. 29 and Wed., Oct. 6 2010
Price: $12
In this omnibus parody of True Blood, Twilight, Glee, and High School Musical, writer Amy Whittenberger and director Andrew Kraft combine two pop-culture crazes: vampires and singing, dancing high schoolers. Sixteen-year-old Suckie Stickhouse moves to a town called Wiccan Park, enrolls in a school filled with undead musical-theater lovers (Glee's trademark "Don't Stop Believin'" becomes "Don't Stop Bleedin'"), and falls into a love triangle with a shirt-hating werewolf and a brooding vampire (hilariously played by James Scott, careening from James Dean-esque cool to Gene Wilder-esque hysteria). Whittenberger correctly locates what all of her targets have in common--suppressed desire, whether allegorized as ambivalent bloodthirstiness or channeled into production numbers. But she's bitten off more than she can spoof, and the thing never quite coheres. --Zac Thompson
