True Story

Rated R · 100 minutes · 2015

Adapted from a nonfiction book by Michael Finkel, this engrossing drama recounts Finkel's professional relationship with Christian Longo, an Oregon man charged with murdering his wife and three children. When they meet, Finkel (Jonah Hill) is trying to salvage his reputation after being fired by the New York Times for fabrication; Longo (James Franco) is trying to con Finkel into publishing his version of events and grants him exclusive interviews for a book project on the condition that the reporter maintain confidentiality until after the verdict is announced. One can quarrel with the casting—when Hill and Franco sat across a table from each other in a prison visiting room, I kept expecting one of them to pull out a giant bong—but the script is first-rate, questioning whether any story can really be credible when both the writer and the subject have everything to gain from it. Rupert Goold directed; with Felicity Jones.
