True Grit

John Wayne won his Oscar for his self-parodistic performance in this cutesy-poo western (1969) about a teenage girl (Kim Darby) who hires a broken-down gunfighter to avenge the murder of her father. The director, Henry Hathaway, is another old veteran, and the cinematographer is the great Lucien Ballard, but somehow it comes off like a TV celebrity roast. Dennis Hopper played a minor role as a sniveling punk in the film, which came out at the same time his epoch-making Easy Rider was hitting the screens. With Robert Duvall, Strother Martin, Glen Campbell, and Jeff Corey.
