It isn’t too hard to catch saxophonist and clarinetist Edward Wilkerson Jr. and percussionist Michael Zerang around town, but their sporadic gigs with equally ubiquitous bassist Tatsu Aoki as Trio WAZ (which has yet to record) provide a chance to hear them doing things they don’t do enough in their other projects. With 8 Bold Souls, Shadow Vignettes, and Frequency, Wilkerson either leads the band or plays as part of a team, and his eloquent horn playing is often confined to short bursts; here he rolls out long, winding lines that build in intensity the longer they unspool. And though Zerang’s versatility is unimpeachable—there can’t be many percussionists who sound equally persuasive alongside Bonnie “Prince” Billy and a block of dried ice—he rarely swings as hard and as fluidly as he does here. Meanwhile Aoki contributes fleet, kinetic grooves similar to his work in his collaborations with tenor man Fred Anderson. —Bill Meyer
