Transformers

Not a movie, just one gigantic commercial for Hasbro, this collaboration between director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg is a textbook case of cynical Hollywood extravagance. State-of-the-art CGI might please the now-grown fans of the popular line of Autobot and Decepticon toys introduced in the 80s, but the embarrassingly weak screenplay by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (The Island, Mission: Impossible 3) will disappoint those hoping for entertainment value beyond the spectacle of robotic aliens morphing into cars, trucks, tanks, and jet fighters. As if aware of their insignificance, Shia LaBeouf, Tyrese Gibson, Anthony Anderson, and John Turturro ham their way through the boring high-tech drivel about a war over earth's future, while Josh Duhamel and Jon Voight play it straight. Hugo Weaving voices the evil Megatron. PG-13, 144 min.
