Adapted from Hitori Nakano's best-selling novel, this winsome 2005 romantic comedy was a runaway hit in its native Japan. A shy computer geek (Takayuki Yamada) rescues a pretty woman (Miki Nakatani) from a belligerent drunk on the subway and, egged on by his Internet chat buddies, sets out to woo her. The simple plot allows for considerable visual invention, from eye-popping graphics that comment on the action to multiply split screens that show how online messaging both unites and isolates the correspondents (two of whom turn out to be a troubled married couple). The playful tone segues to an emotionally resonant finish, which unfolds against a candy-colored Tokyo even Parisians might envy. Masanori Murakami directed. In Japanese with subtitles. 101 min.
