Towkio with Savemoney, Lucki Eck$, Hurt Everybody All Ages Member Picks Recommended Soundboard

Even without a meteoric young superstar like Keef or Chance attracting ears like insects to a bug zapper, the local hip-hop scene thrived and evolved in fascinating ways in 2014. One great example is Hurt Everybody, a three-piece union that’s been brewing a heady, avant-pop sound. Producer Mulatto Beats, rapper-producer Carl, and rapper-producer Supa Bwe tapped into some real magic—or “#mahjic,” or “#mayjyik,” or whatever hashtag the dudes prefer—on the group’s debut mixtape, Hurt Everybody EP, which dropped in July and is as long as most full-lengths. The members maintain an alluring grace through a sinister-spiked, low-key ballad (“Sun Goddess”), a bombastic, twisted antibanger (“Transmissions”), and a fierce takedown of racism (“Treat Me (Caucasian)”), one that slays as a single and features rising MC Mick Jenkins. Hurt Everybody has been keeping the should-be hits coming: the new, woozy “Grandma Death,” off the forthcoming 4 Kings, has a suave vocal harmony that sounds like it came straight from an early-90s R&B chart topper. —Leor Galil
