Local collective Save Money is hip-hop to its core, but some members have hypnotized the masses with broader pop notes—go ahead and spin Vic Mensa’s house-evangelizing hit “Down on My Luck” or a large portion of Chance the Rapper’s Acid Rap. Now Preston Oshita, aka Towkio, has made a big step into the spotlight with his debut full-length mixtape, .Wav Theory. Save Money’s wild card, Oshita sports a septum piercing and likes to pile his lengthy hair into a messy anti-beehive—the dude embraces his eccentricities, and on .Wav Theory he makes them work. The mixtape sequences seemingly incompatible tracks into an order that pops by blending avant with old-school electronic and hip-hop sounds. Oshita’s vocal style rests in a gray area between rapping, singing, and talk rapping as he cleanly pivots into different flows without drawing much attention away from a song’s momentum. On “Reflections” he raps about a young woman scrambling to find a nightclub bathroom to do coke, instilling pathos, empathy, and originality into a well-worn narrative. As a woozy, Kaytranda-produced dance instrumental pulses along with the great big disco ball in the sky, the track evokes the blur of spending the wee hours of the night sweating it out on the dance floor. —Leor Galil
