Tommy Keene, Sally Crewe

When: 2009
Price: $8
Very few musicians cut as much of the fat out of their songs as British singer and guitarist Sally Crewe does, but fortunately for her, some of them share her adopted hometown of Austin, Texas: members of Spoon have regularly helped her out, and the band’s drummer, Jim Eno, recorded her excellent third album, Your Nearest Exit May Be Behind You (8-Track Mind), which sounds inspired by late-70s British new wave. Every song is a model of economy, and Crewe sings and plays without a wasted gesture or note, which allows her lithe melodies to hit with maximum force. Power-pop cult hero Tommy Keene played bass with Crewe’s band, the Sudden Moves, on a recent UK tour, but on this trip the job goes to Adrian Esparza—Keene, however, is headlining the show with his own group, supporting the hard-rocking new In the Late Bright (Second Motion). —Peter Margasak
