Kevin Miller and Sherman Edwards play squabbling roommates in this fourth installment ("The Rift Episode") of their sitcom spoof Tomato/Tomatoe. Rather than take the easy route of playing up sitcom cliches by dumbing them down even further, the 60-minute show creates genuine comedy from likable characters. Redheaded Kevin (Miller) has a wild imagination but few social skills; when the more studly Sherman (Edwards) attempts an act of kindness that backfires, there's a blowup, and the two find themselves with much worse temporary roommates. Under Neal Sachman's direction, Miller and Edwards also play a senile landlord, an annoying gay neighbor, and various characters in commercials--including Miller's rather terrifying punch-drunk pitchman. The commercials can be confusing and the humor too mild, but Miller and Edwards's believable roommates carry the day. --Laura Molzahn
