Drama
V.I. Pudovkin's unaccountable enthusiasm for this 1921 rural melodrama has established it as a staple of Introduction to Film courses, but as academic classics go it's not all that bad. Henry King's direction owes everything to Griffith, which helps, but even D.W. wouldn't have permitted himself a biblical allegory as painful as this one.
