To the New Girl | Berger Park | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
In this evening of short monologues by Samantha Macher, ten cheated-on wives address their husbands’ new girlfriends (or, in one case, boyfriend). Macher lets us hear from a wide range of ages and classes, but she often settles for stereotypes—wealthy ice queen, perky Bible thumper, guilt-trippy Jewish grandma—and the tone of nearly every speech is the same: catty anger shaded by sad resignation. After a while, the lack of variation and surprise has a numbing effect. Director Cheryl Snodgrass has assembled a fine cast for her staging for Foundlings Theatre; even when the characters are cliched, the performers’ commitment, energy, and emotional insight provide an almost convincing illusion of depth. I kept wishing they had more challenging material to work with. —Zac Thompson
