To an Unknown God

This moody, poetic Spanish film (1977) is centered on an aging professional magician who traces his homosexuality back to a boyhood encounter with Garcia Lorca. Director Jaime Chavarri does not treat his character's gayness as a political issue but as a metaphor for an affective difference—a specificity and intensity of emotion that will forever set him apart from the people around him. Hector Alterio stars, in a quiet, commanding performance; with Javier Elorriaga, Maria Rose Salgado, and Rosa Valenty.
