T.J. Miller

When: Thu., Nov. 13 2008
Price: $15
Last year T.J. Miller went from playing Snubfest—the local festival that showcases acts rejected by other festivals—to a recurring role in the ABC sitcom Carpoolers, and from there to his first feature film role, as the guy holding the camera in Cloverfield. Before moving to LA in the summer of '07, the self-described "amusement engineer" lived in Chicago for several years, doing improv at iO, sketch work with Second City, and stand-up all over and launching the Internet porn spoof verybadporn.com. Miller's stand-up act hits but occasionally misses big because he experiments with characters and absurd setups. When I first caught it, he was hosting a burlesque show, and his bits between acts—self-deprecating, charismatic, deadpan, quick—were the evening's highlight. Another stand-up told me afterward, "That guy's gonna be the next big thing outta Chicago." --Ryan Hubbard
