Even by Shakespeare's standards, the villainous deeds in this revenge tragedy are exceptionally barbaric. There's filicide, execution, self-mutilation, cannibalism . . . and those are the acts committed by the good guys. With so many opportunities for over-the-top offings, you'd think the athletic, spectacle-driven company Babes With Blades would make this all-female production a great deal of fun. Instead, despite some moody and smart scenic design by Carolyn Voss, Janice L. Blixt's foggy and underwhelming staging feels like a milquetoast retread. Aaron the Moor, arguably the Bard's cruelest anarchist, delivers her speeches with the politeness and engagement of a sales pitch, while Saturninus sneers, spits, and screams her dialogue as much as possible, inadvertently tipping the show into comedy. —Dan Jakes
