Originally written for a musical-theater festival, Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell's show is about a couple guys named Jeff and Hunter writing a show for a musical-theater festival. Watching characters create the show they're in is a lot of fun at first, especially given Bowen and Bell's fondness for Broadway ephemera (the lyrics of one song consist of the titles of famous flops). But when the focus shifts to the musical's postfestival development (it landed on the Great White Way in 2008), the authors lose their sense of humor and the navel-gazing grows tedious. Matthew Crowle's Hunter and Stephen Schellhardt's Jeff have an appealing Oscar-and-Felix dynamic in Peter Amster's production. Miscast as their female sidekicks, McKinley Carter and Christine Sherrill fail to supply the necessary sass. —Zac Thompson
