'Tis pity so much work has gone into Red Tape Theatre Company's spirited revival of John Ford's potboiler, set here not in 17th-century Parma but in a Belmont Avenue rock bar. The poor diction of Robert Hankins's 16-member cast is undermined by the terrible acoustics of the venue, a church gym--fatal in combination with sepulchrally inadequate lighting and a sprawling playing area that makes intelligent blocking impossible. This Jacobean drama of incest, revenge, bigotry, betrayal, and gratuitous cruelty is already an exercise in excess, so it needs clarity--not something that Red Tape's unintentional dumb show provides. As the sibling lovers, Shay Ames and Brandi Holtz are appropriately anguished and guilt ridden. Through 12/14: Mon-Wed 7 PM, Saint Peter's Church, 621 W. Belmont, 773-347-1035, $10-$15.
