A dark romance set behind the scenes of a 1930s traveling circus, this dance-theater showpiece from Chicago Tap Theatre is written and narrated by Chicago slam poet Marc Kelly Smith, who also plays the ringmaster. The story revolves around two lovers: a guileless girl, half of a tightrope-walking sister act, and a mysterious clown new to the troupe. Yet aside from some cuddling and flirting, we never see the central couple in duet despite ample opportunities, a pity given the strength of TTC artistic director Mark Yonally’s choreography. Odder still is Smith’s exposition, which bleeds well into act two and consistently reveals facts before they become relevant to the (formulaic) plot. Pratfalls aside, the show has loads of daring, well-executed footwork; clever set and costume designs that lend the production a sharp visual edge; and Kurt Schweitz’s lovely original music for violin and toy piano, which perfectly suits the circus theme. —Jena Cutie
