It looked like the end was in sight for Scranton’s Tigers Jaw after keyboardist-vocalist Brianna Collins wrote a cryptic Tumblr post about the band’s unclear future following the simultaneous departure of three of its members (drummer Pat Brier, bassist Dennis Mishko, and guitarist-vocalist Adam McIlwee). Her vague message led me to believe a complete dissolution was next, in part because McIlwee’s winsome, yearning vocals have been an indelible part of the five-piece group’s homemade emo-qua-indie identity. But Collins and guitarist-vocalist Ben Walsh decided to continue on, thanks at first to some help from the band’s departed members, who pitched in to record last year’s Charmer (Run For Cover) before fully bowing out. Loads of great emo songs and albums are inspired by living a life in limbo, and Charmer is shot through with plenty of anxiety and hopefulness. Collins commands more oxygen than ever, and turns out especially strong on the pitch-perfect, blissfully downcast single “Hum.” Though I miss the old version of Tigers Jaw, the bright flashes of Charmer give me reason to look forward to the group’s next steps. —Leor Galil
