A need to dominate and a simultaneous need to be taken care of drive both the characters in this 1976 two-person play by German playwright Franz Xaver Kroetz. Martha, a successful butcher in middle age, starts seeing Otto, a boorish, insecure working stiff who belittles her appearance and lack of femininity. No mere doormat, Martha thinks she can bring her man to heel in subtler ways. Though their standoff grows static when Kroetz fails to develop his ideas further, Andy Hager's staging gets an added spark from the quiet desperation conveyed by Laurie Larson as Martha and H.B. Ward as Otto. But Hager misses the script's hints of squalor and violence; Carolyn Voss's detailed butcher-shop set, for instance, is too handsome to be menacing. —Zac Thompson
