In characteristic fashion, Erasing the Distance turns a verbatim interview with a person beset by mental health struggles—here a Thai woman consumed with anger, guilt, and existential despair after growing up under an alcoholic father—into a theatrical monologue performed with minimal set or costumes. Also characteristically, actress Melissa Canciller performs with such understated candor it’s hard to believe she’s acting. It’s a winning formula the company’s employed for a decade. Uncharacteristically, creator Wannapa Pimtong-Eubanks adds a Butoh-esque dancer who silently expresses everything about the storyteller’s inner psychological state that’s already readily apparent. It’s an unfortunate distraction in an otherwise affecting piece that turns a sadly typical tale of self-doubt and self-loathing into something lyrical.
