There's an elaborate calculus behind this five-week performance series. Curious Theatre Branch has combined a bunch of variables--texts, authors, actors, time slots--according to a system that ought to yield an interesting array of outcomes, every night being in some ways the same and in some ways different from the others. The only real constant is Curious cofounder Beau O'Reilly: one of his short plays, Tessie Lives at the End of the Hall, will be performed every Friday of the run; another, The House on the Lake by the Woods by the Ocean, every Saturday; and a third, God Fucking Bless Henry Welles, every fucking Sunday. The rest is complicated, but you can be sure that each bill will also feature something by (a) a talented local O'Reilly compadre such as John Starrs, Jenny Magnus, or the Reader's 2009 pick for best emerging playwright, Mark Chrisler, and (b) an international big name such as Donald Barthelme, Samuel Beckett, or Jack Kerouac. In the fifth week they'll throw in a bonus big name--Hemingway. As arduous as all this is to explain, it should be fairly marvelous to see. --Tony Adler
