As high-speed military drawdowns force thousands of troops back into civilian life, it's a good time to get to know the country's soldiers. Aaron Sawyer's wry, sympathetic, and straightforward view of the modern soldier is by far the strongest element of this intriguing (if muddled) retelling of Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters for Red Theater. One year after the death of their father, three civilian sisters from Nebraska remain stuck on the outskirts of a drone base in Djibouti, whiling away the post-9/11 decade of America's military adventuring while their inheritance issues get resolved. Sawyer, who also directs, sends this character-driven tale in a few too many directions, though it's hard to argue that any are worth ditching. Some even beg for a spinoff—notably Victoria Alvarez-Chacon's wonderful, searing performance as a transgender enlistee. –Keith Griffith
