The experiment running in Will Eno's exasperating one-man show seems to be this: How many painful personal memories can a character divulge without becoming sympathetic? Thom's monologue comes wrapped in tortured layers of self-concealment, two-bit postmodern acknowledgements of its own artifice, and an insecure sort of scorn toward anyone who's paid to see it. Eno's psychological tricks, which include daring viewers to leave after an audience plant bolts from the theater, make me suspect that anyone enjoying this play, which was short-listed for a Pulitzer in 2005, is suffering from Stockholm syndrome. Under Jeremy Wechsler's direction for Theater Wit, Lance Baker paints a subtle and convincing portrait, but it's not of someone worth meeting. —Keith Griffith
