In the grab bag that is Thodos Dance Chicago's "New Dances" showcase this year, Jacqueline Stewart's The Art of Ice Cream packs a time-tripping punch. It took me straight back to junior high. Against a backdrop of early 60s hits--Little Eva’s "Loco-Motion," Petula Clark's "Romeo," and Ray Charles's "You Are My Sunshine"--innocence rules, especially in early scenes landing somewhere between horseplay and romance. Three guys, a pair of female BFFs, and four girls who serve as a Greek chorus negotiate the shifting sands of amatory alliances and betrayals. Though the piece has a clear story and characters, "that doesn't mean cheese it up," Stewart warned the performers at a rehearsal. The program's eight other premieres include Effigy--a dance about the sense of vacancy that comes with loss, by guest choreographer Rebecca Lemme--as well as works by company members John Cartwright, Brian Hare, Josh Manculich, Michael McDonald, Mollie Mock and Jeremy Blair, Jessica Miller-Tomlinson, and Wade Schaaf. --Laura Molzahn
