This is a past event.
When: July 16-18 2010
Price: $35
For ten years Thodos Dance Chicago company members have been strutting their choreographic stuff in the troupe's annual New Dances series. The mood is light, but the potential is substantial: some works have entered the Thodos repertory, including last year's ingenious entry from Jessica Miller Tomlinson, Architecture: Splintered and Cracked. Tomlinson's 2010 submission is distinctive too. Big Technique takes hairpin turns, driven by a musical pastiche ranging from a Vivaldi concerto to a Sly & the Family Stone bass riff. "My challenge," Tomlinson says, "is to tie it all together." As if run in reverse, Big Technique opens in grand-finale fashion and concludes with dancers noodling around in a rehearsal setting. Jeremy Blair, Wade Schaaf, and Jackie Stewart return with new pieces as well; Brian Hare, Sharon Joyce Kung, Joshua Manculich, and Danielle Scanlon have work in the showcase for the first time. Guest choreographers Francisco Avina and Stephanie Martinez Bennitt premiere their Quieting the Clock. --Laura Molzahn
