Wendy Wasserstein's last play--she died of cancer a few months after it opened off-Broadway in 2005--takes a hard look at doctrinaire feminism. The witty, funny first act exposes the prejudices driving neurotic English professor and liberal standard-bearer Laurie Jameson, who accuses a student named Woodson Bull III (the "Third" of the title) of plagiarism. A sympathetic yet ridiculous member of the sandwich generation, caring for college-age children and a father with dementia, Laurie becomes more serious if less believable in the second act as she makes things right with several people. (If these reconciliations take place at a desperate speed, it's hard to blame Wasserstein, who was working against her own deadline.) Under Sarah Gabel's direction, the cast is excellent--especially Robin Lewis-Bedz as Laurie, Michael Gonring as Third, and Susan Felder as a dying friend. --Laura Molzahn
