A relic from the days when nudie pics and Bergman films routinely shared the same downtown double bills, this 1967 curiosity by sexploitation specialist Radley Metzger follows a young married woman (Essy Persson) on a flashback-laden visit back to the French boarding school where she lost her heart and virginity to a fellow student (Anna Gael). As porn it's pretty weak tea, showing not so much as a nipple for 60 minutes, but the black-and-white cinematography could more than pass muster in a genuine art film and Metzger makes a palpable effort to get inside the love affair instead of just perving on two hot chicks making out. There's considerable camp value to Persson’s overheated voice-overs, telling us what Metzger couldn't show ("My tongue went searching through salty darkness, through clinging darkness over the most delicate of meat"). 118 min.
