In 1768, Susanna Centlivre's farce was regarded so highly as an expression of Anglo-American culture that New York's John Street Theatre staged it for a visiting Cherokee delegation. Point of Contention's new off-night production seems to be motivated by the same pedagogical impulse, coming across like something put on by an earnest curator determined to hook the kids on history. Margo Gray's flamboyant direction seizes on the play's bawdy humor to help us through nearly two and a half hours of confusion-reversal-repeat, leaving no double entendre unmolested by eyebrow-wiggling emphasis. Our curator fails us in one crucial regard, though: Gray apparently sets the action in 19th-century Rio rather than Centlivre's original 18th-century Lisbon, distorting the continental themes underlying this classic of romance and intrigue. --Keith Griffith
