For the first three acts of William Shakespeare's late-career romance, the jealous and bullheaded king Leontes, who wrongly suspects his wife of sleeping with his best friend, seems headed for a tragic undoing similar to what happens to Othello. But then, all of a sudden, the action skips ahead 16 years and the Bard engineers a miraculous (though not entirely satisfying) happy ending. The shifts in time, tone, place, and genre prove too much for the cast of this Promethean Theatre Ensemble staging; they overplay both the tragedy and the comedy. One notable exception is Cameron Feagin's performance as the mistreated queen. Her sorrowful, quietly baffled declaration of innocence is far more moving and convincing than all the grimacing and declaiming we get elsewhere. —Zac Thompson
