The War on Drugs’ glorious new album, Wagonwheel Blues (Secretly Canadian), is a welcome riposte to that segment of the underground still trippin’ balls on bad nouveau-hippie juju. These Philly kids (actually, kids is wrong, even though they sound a lot older than they could possibly be) have left their feathers-in-the-hair peer group behind, moving into the crazed perambulations of Dylan circa the Rolling Thunder Revue and the churning, chiming feel-bad drift of the Velvet Underground. This admittedly isn’t an original blueprint, but at least pilfering from that era feels clean and righteous—not least because it provides all of us a respite from further indignity at the hands of crystal-gazing, idea-free jam bands. Sleep Out and the Glorious Vapors open. —Jessica Hopper
