The Waiting Room

Immigrants to the Americas can be classed roughly into two groups: those seeking greater opportunity and those seeking sanctuary when their homelands implode. In this subdued Canadian drama (2015), Jasmin Geljo plays one of the latter, a middle-aged actor who was acclaimed in the former Yugoslavia but whose career has sputtered since he fled war-torn Sarajevo in the early 1990s to settle in Toronto. The best scenes show the actor auditioning for minor roles as a cop or a gangster or trying, with the help of an emigre colleague, to revive one of their early successes, a broad comedy with drag elements. Igor Drljaca directed his own screenplay. In English and subtitled Bosnian.
