Harley Granville-Barker's 1905 masterpiece, in which zealously principled Edward Voysey inherits his father's wholly corrupt investment firm, needs adapting like the Mona Lisa needs sideburns. Still, David Mamet's substantially rewritten 2005 version is impressive. Mamet streamlines the action while preserving the ethical complexity and literate wit--and, astonishingly, offers a more satisfying finale. The first half of director James Bohnen's handsomely designed Remy Bumppo production is too starchily Victorian to convey much. But in the second his stalwart cast, led by the boyishly charismatic Raymond Fox as Edward, unbutton just enough to reveal the emotional turmoil that gives the play its powerful stakes and disarming humor. Granville-Barker's comedy about the consequences of financial hubris couldn't be more timely. --Justin Hayford
