In John Irving's The World According to Garp, T.S. Garp plays a twisted game with his wife, Helen, telling her lifelike stories, then making her guess which parts he made up. This newish play from longtime stage and TV actor Hamish Linklater turns a similar trick, with lying characters whose truths seep out annoyingly, so many persistent drips through a cracked ceiling. In Beckettian form, those truths come out of two people waiting for a bus, talking a whole lot of nothing and everything. The play itself errs in the ending's supernatural twist, but at least up to that point we're led by director Shade Murray, whose excellent eye for reality shines through these characters who munch potato chips, drink, and lament and celebrate that most overwhelming state of being: living. —Chloe Riley
