The Unholy

The Unholy hopes to take this holiday weekend from sacred to sinister. Combining a journalism thriller with a supernatural horror story, the movie follows disgraced journalist Gerry Fenn (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as he tries to revive his career on the back of a small-town miracle. Enter Alice (Cricket Brown), a deaf girl who was visited by the Virgin Mary and can suddenly hear, speak, and heal the sick. Based on James Herbert’s best-selling book Shrine, writer-director Evan Spiliotopoulos’s film retains a “beware of false prophets” message as it becomes evident Alice’s newfound power comes with terrifying consequences. Perhaps this explains why it’s so difficult to invest in Morgan’s character, who follows the familiar arc of a sinner turned saint by film’s end, which feels no more true than anything else. If this choice was paired with a clever cliffhanger, it might have worked. Instead, it will leave viewers uninvested in The Unholy.
